School's Green Audit Award ORCHID

The Singapore Environment Council (SEC) gives out awards to school that participate in its “How Green is Your School” programme. Mayflower Secondary has been participating in this programme since 2007.

The programme hopes to highlight that as an individual, and collectively as a group, we are able to make a difference to our environment.

In 2007, we received the Hibiscus Award. In 2008 we have improved and received the next level of award which is the Orchid Award.

This award is given to school which has satisfactorily complete at least 90% of the total Audit questions as well as showing a high-level of environmental concern.

This year, Ophelia Sek of Sec 3I represented our school to received the award.

We are looking forward to continue to play our part in protecting the environment. Although we do not go for reward nor award, we are glad when our effort is recognised.

Schools' Green Audit Award

The Singapore Environment Council (SEC) is giving out awards to schools that participate in its "How Green is Your School" programme.

Mrs Selva, our vice-principal is receiving the award on behalf of our school from Mr. Howard Shaw the chairman of Singapore Environmnetal Council.

Here is a pictorial tour of Mayflower Secondary School -- A garden in bloom.

Mayflower Secondary School has been awarded the Hibiscus Award for the year 2007.

A quite corner for Mayflowerian to rest and recreate.

Knowledge is like a garden; if it is not cultivated, it cannot be harvested.

I THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

About the green audit award

Dear YEG,
Mayflower has been working to make the school green. We have embark on the green Audit Award as a way to see how far we have come and how much more we have to do

Below is a write up about the award from the website How Green is my school.
http://www.sec.org.sg/green_audit/green_audit_about.htm

We will be asking all YEG to play their part. There is only one Earth. OURS.

The Singapore Environment Council (SEC) is giving out awards to schools that participate in its "How Green is Your School" programme.
This programme comes with a self-help manual, which will assist your school in gauging its level of green-consciousness.

The Programme is a simple environmental audit programme.
The students will calculate amongst other things the school's usage of:

- Water- Electricity
As well as the amount and type of rubbish that is generated by the:
- School canteen
- School office/staff room
- Classrooms
- School garden/others

From these findings, students will be able to suggest ways to save and cut down on unnecessary wastage and find ways to reduce and recycle the garbage that is generated.
The programme hopes to highlight that as an individual, and collectively as a group, we are able to make a difference to our environment.
